FINAL HIGHLIGHTS: USA v. Japan – FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015

The United States roared out to a 4-0 first-half lead on the back of a hat trick from Carli Lloyd in the span of about 15 minutes, and then held on comfortably to beat the defending World Cup champion Japan in a rematch of the 2011 final. It is the third time the United States has won the Women’s World Cup, and the first since 1999.

Lloyd’s third goal was particularly memorable, coming from near the halfway line. But it was a complete, overpowering performance from the Americans, who had been much maligned in the buildup and early stages of the World Cup but who found their stride against China and only improved from there.
